Reckless

Reckless

Director’s Note

2016 has been, so far, pretty reckless in nature.  It’s a time of disarray.  All you have to do is look at your Facebook or Twitter feed for evidence that things are coming undone.  At the time Reckless was written, in the mid-80’s, we were in the midst of witnessing the dismantling of an entire generation of artists.  It’s clear the play is an allegory for the upheaval our culture was experiencing during that time.  But, it very much applies to the current turbulence we’ve encountered as of late – the vitriolic battle for political power, a vacancy in the Supreme Court, the loss of SEVERAL cultural icons, the deep denial we’re all in about the environment, the constant threat of terrorism, the continued struggle for civil rights come to mind – we are IN IT, and nobody’s saying what they really mean, nor is anybody really listening to one another.  And so here we are, all gathered here today to get through this thing called life.  To take pause and be reminded that, as much as we’d like to think we’ve got a say in the matter, life is anything but predictable. The groundlessness of it all!  It’s overwhelming.  And, humbling. So, let’s share a laugh over it, shall we?
